      How a Carburettor Works

      At its core, a carburettor is a tube through which filtered air flows on its way to the engine’s intake manifold. Inside this tube, there is a constriction, or a narrow section, called a venturi. As air passes through this venturi, its speed increases, which causes a drop in its pressure. This pressure drop creates a vacuum that draws fuel from a small reservoir within the carburettor, known as the float bowl.

      Here’s a step-by-step breakdown of the process:

      • Air Intake: The engine’s downward piston stroke creates a vacuum, pulling air through the carburettor’s main tube.
      • Venturi Effect: As this air flows through the narrow venturi, its velocity increases, and its pressure decreases.
      • Fuel Drawing: This low-pressure area sucks fuel from the float bowl through a tiny nozzle called a jet.
      • Atomization: The fuel is drawn into the high-speed airflow, where it breaks into a fine mist—a process called atomization.
      • Mixture Delivery: This air-fuel mixture then travels through the intake manifold and into the engine’s cylinders, where it is ignited by the spark plug to produce power.

      A throttle valve, typically a butterfly valve connected to the accelerator pedal or throttle grip, controls the amount of air-fuel mixture entering the engine, thus regulating its speed and power. For cold starts, a choke plate can be used to restrict airflow, creating a richer (more fuel, less air) mixture that helps the engine start in cold conditions.

      Advantages of Carburettors

      Despite being older technology, carburettors offer several distinct benefits that keep them relevant, especially for classic car restorers and some motorsport enthusiasts.

      • Simplicity and Serviceability: Carburettors are entirely mechanical. They have no complex electronics, sensors, or computers. This simplicity makes them relatively easy to understand, diagnose, and repair with basic tools. For a hands-on enthusiast, rebuilding a carburettor can be a rewarding weekend project.
      • Lower Initial Cost: The manufacturing cost of a carburettor is significantly lower than that of a fuel injection system. This made them a cost-effective choice for automakers for many years and keeps them affordable for aftermarket applications today.
      • Ease of Tuning (for experts): While tuning a carburettor to perfection requires skill and experience, it doesn’t necessitate specialized electronic equipment. Adjustments to the air-fuel mixture, idle speed, and other parameters can be made with simple hand tools, allowing tuners to make changes on the fly.
      • Classic Feel: Many purists appreciate the direct, mechanical connection a carburettor provides. The engine’s response can feel more raw and unfiltered, which is a desirable characteristic for many classic car and motorcycle riders.

      Disadvantages of Carburettors

      However, the same mechanical nature that gives carburettors their charm also leads to several drawbacks.

      • Sensitivity to Environmental Changes: Carburettors are calibrated for a specific set of atmospheric conditions. Changes in altitude, air temperature, or humidity can affect the air density, throwing off the air-fuel mixture. This often results in poor performance, rough idling, or a need for manual readjustment.
      • Lower Fuel Efficiency: Because they rely on a passive vacuum system, carburettors are not as precise as fuel injection systems in delivering the optimal amount of fuel. This often leads to a richer mixture than necessary, which wastes fuel and reduces overall miles per gallon (MPG).
      • Higher Emissions: The less precise fuel mixture from a carburettor leads to incomplete combustion, resulting in higher emissions of pollutants like hydrocarbons (HC), carbon monoxide (CO), and nitrogen oxides (NOx). This is the primary reason why manufacturers moved away from carburettors to meet stricter environmental regulations.
      • Cold Start Issues: While a choke helps with cold starts, it’s a manual process that can be finicky. It’s common to experience rough idling, stalling, or hesitation until the engine warms up to its operating temperature.

Unlike carburettors, which rely on passive vacuum pressure, fuel injection is an active system controlled by an electronic control unit (ECU).

The ECU receives real-time data from sensors placed throughout the engine and vehicle. The injector opens for a specific duration (known as the pulse width), spraying a fine, atomized mist of fuel into the intake port or directly into the combustion chamber.
      • Combustion: The precise air-fuel mixture enters the cylinder, where it is efficiently burned, maximizing power and minimising waste.

      Fuel injection systems offer a host of benefits that have made them the standard for virtually all modern vehicles.

      • Superior Fuel Efficiency: The ECU’s ability to precisely meter fuel means the engine only gets what it needs, and no more. This precise control results in significantly better fuel economy compared to a carbureted engine.
      • Increased Power and Performance: By consistently providing the optimal air-fuel ratio under all conditions, fuel injection allows an engine to produce more power and torque. The engine runs smoother, with a more responsive throttle and a broader, more consistent powerband.
      • Lower Emissions: Better fuel atomization and more complete combustion lead to drastically lower emissions. The closed-loop feedback from the oxygen sensor allows the ECU to constantly fine-tune the mixture, ensuring the catalytic converter operates at maximum efficiency.
